I recently fitted a calf skin head to my Reiter Galax. Now it has had time to settle and is tightened how I like it this is a sound test to demonstrate the effect on tone.

Thanks for the positive comments. The tune is actually a version of Flatwoods in A. But with an altered B part without the rhythmic peculiarities of that tune just to add a bit of drive for a sound test. I can provide a tab of the simplified and full version of Flatwoods based on Norm Edmonds if anyone is interested.

Sounds good, Mike. I really like a hide head for clawhammer, it puts just the right amount of mellow and complexity into the tone. You play it well, too.

As I mentioned in my email my tab of Norm Edmond's version is as close as I could get from the Old-Timers recording but if you notice anything I missed or didn't quite get right please let me know and I'll alter the tab for future reference.

I love playing Flatwoods* too. The B part takes some getting used to but it has a great shuffle rhythm. I can see the similarities with Johnson Boys but that tune is played in D where Flatwoods is an A tune.

* I'm never sure whether it should be 'Flatwood' or 'Flatwoods'? I think it's named after the place. But the sleeve notes have it as 'Flatwoods', while the radio show announcer on the recording distinctly calls it as 'Flatwood'.
