I'm guessing the original membrane was rice paper, which dissolved in the mix of warm water, soap, and bleach I soaked these in.
Can't be TOO careful at an estate sale. Whaddif the previous owner died of some dreaded and highly contagious disease????
Anyway, the rinse water turned the same brown as you can get by leaving a cigarette in a glass where the ice cubes are melting, after the booze is gone.
And Mylar (TM) from a snack wrapper makes a pretty good replacement membrane.
Now, if I add little wheels to the bottom, I can claim I drive a Hummer!
