Anybody ever tried to record straight to their phone using a mic?

Only the inbuilt ones, my Samsung Mini wasnt bad really.
I guess you may be able to make a 3.5 mm trrs connector(like a handsfree headset), which terminates in an xlr socket so you could plug it into a preamp to use as your mic.
Or, there may be a way to use the USB socket, but I've not researched it, I know android 4.1 supports MIDI over USB.
This is just ideas really, the top method deiends on the analog-digital converters in the phone, which I dont think there's any way to change.

I got interviewed for local radio for a few minutes last week outside work.
The reporter used a microphone going straight into his iPhone.
He interviewed a few of us, did his edits in the car, then uploaded it to the radio station.
My fellow office workers recognised my voice straight away when it aired about 30 mins later; and it sounded like I was in the studio when I heard a repeat the following morning.
I don't know what brand the mic was, but it looked professional.
Summary: very doable.

iphone?
There are several mics available, the best of the bunch is likely the Rode iXY. Watch this quick video review to see how it works and hear some quick audio samples:
