What does the like number, itself, signify, then? If you go to a concert, where there are 400 people in the audience, and 3 people clap - what does that tell you?

Ok, if you post a video and it gets 1500 play counts but no likes, what does that tell you? Does it mean 1500 folks didn't care for your video? Or maybe you see the 1500 count and think that because it got lots of views, that it was proof that everyone loved it ? It could have been a much smaller number of folks viewing the same video multiple times. Thats what I meant earlier-this isnt the same as the real world. We're in cyberville and its much harder to know exactly whats going on.
Don't read too much into 'likes' or play counts, negatively or positively.
That's fine. Thanks.

I think the button is a nice way to show one's appreciation for the effort put forth to post the media. Telling someone you like their post is a nice thing to do to encourage them to do more.

WHY ???
I LIKE the LIKE Button... If you don't like it, just ignore it.

Posting a video is just enough work that if no one looked at it and enjoyed it, you'd wonder "Why did I bother?".
Getting some likes shows you that your effort wasn't for nothing, and that there IS a "market" of sorts for what you posted.
In a topic, a "like" means:
"We would have said the same thing, but you saved us the trouble!"
It means that that person who posted. isn't just speaking for themselves, but for a group at least the size of the people that liked it, and maybe greater.

For the "Like" button, I only press it if I watch a video and I've seen and heard something that "floored" me or it was a "Wow" factor. It shows that at least when a video is posted that somebody liked it.

Since I don't listen to the tunes on the site (I like silence best) I am only concerned with using the "Like" button on forum threads.
I am all in favour of it. The "Like" button allows me to add a certain amount of reinforcement to something another poster has said without coming up with an entire post made up of quotes from others. I can then post my own particular take on the discussion if I feel the need to chime in (Being somewhat windbaggy I usually feel that need) or let the "Likes" do all the work for me. This is particularly good for explaining techniques since it usually takes mer several pages to explain something that someone with a sharper mind will explain in one brief but completely to the point, sentence.
I am aware that this thread is supposed to be about the "Like" button on tunes etc. I cannot even understand why anyone would want to be rid of them.

I'm new to OT banjo/Music but have listened to many good players on the jukebox and wondered why some did not get much more likes. Pretty much if a piece gets more than 10 likes its pretty good and like myself probably most people wont bother liking unless it blows them away. I always look at how much an upload is liked and its pretty accurate as to how good it is. I know there are many great players on the hangout so it probably takes something special to get most to be impressed. But for someone who is learning this new magical instrument and can get many fabulous expressions without words just by turning on some tuning pegs, I like a the like but I can also understand that it is also not needed. If you don't like it change the channel. I cant believe I just commented on this, it must be the Irish whiskey my wife brought home.

It's normal to want some sort of approval from others. It's not narcissism, it's not being a gloryhound. If you have a problem with the like button, you have a problem with normal human urges.
Please learn to love yourself.
