Looks like a Stromberg "Cup-O-Phone" tone ring. (See below.) First one I've ever seen that doesn't have a resonator.

Is this the same stromberg that became stromberg voisenet? That would make this pre 1921 and this says made in Boston the stromberg I know of was out of Chicago

Nope. Completely different. Stromberg was a high-end maker and according to Stromberg guru Vinnie Mondello, never made a 5-string.

Here are some pictures of an early Stromberg Plectrum banjo c. 1915. Note the early tailpiece before the Stromberg name was applied. Not many plectrum banjos were made, mostly tenor banjos. What a sound! I believe that they were also using Fairbanks hooks before they fashioned their own.
