It was a group effort! Larry (Helix Banjos) provided the most meaningful reconstruction by rebuilding Jay Treat's long neck pot. Roger Sperling fit the neck back on the finished pot at no small effort (recutting the heel and repositioning the anchor bolts). All three of us spent much time chipping off Beyer's harder than wood putty stuff. The whole process took way too long, but the result was that Jay now has a real live long neck banjo to play and is a happy man. Thank you Larry and Roger. Paul
Here are two shots of the finished banjo and three shots of what Jay received from Mr. Jonathan Beyer. I wish that the 'finished' pictures were better to show just how good the banjo came out.

Good job. It's often harder to un-do previous repairs than it is to fix the original problem.

great job! Wondering if we should guess what problem the banjo had that the "mud" was suppose to correct??![]()

It looks like someone thought that total contact of the heel would be better than the 2 normal spots.
"Full Contact" heel?

A lot of chinking. Was the original "repair" trying to keep the heat in or out?

Full Contact Heel should not be a surprise on an Asian banjo,

since it's part of an ancient Asian tradition.
I've used wood putty at the end of a neck, but never under or around a flange.
Nice work, all y'all.

I was curious too. Here is a relevant link from earlier discussions. I'm not trying to dredge up old issues, etc., but since we were all wondering, here it is from the archive
