Hiya, I feel really daft asking this question, but as a complete beginner, is it at all normal to feel a painless but persistent twitching in the right forearm after what is not an immense amount of practice? I don't play fast nor do I play with an inordinate amount of tension, but I do have some history with pinched nerves in the neck and shoulder. If, anyone without these problems has experienced twitching that hasnt resulted in anything worse, it will be a great comfort as I honestly want to keep learning!
Thanks in advance for anyone bothered enough to answer!
:)

You may be one of the fortunate ones if it is only the forearm!!

Don't worry, you are using muscles in ways that are unfamiliar. I have found a great deal help by employing trigger point therapy for various problems- really works, but self massage goes a long way to help.
Good luck, and good pickin'

Thanks for answering! I feel better about continuing. And will look out for other body parts twitching!!
No issues with the funny bone.
Sandy Bell's is a landmark watering hole here in Edinburgh! Amazing that you played there BDCA!

I used to hang out with Hamish Imlach and Billy Connolly in the early 70s but I was back at Sandy Bell's a couple of years ago for a session. One of the guys remembered me from 35 years prior.
Cheers!

Try eating more bananas. Low potassium has been linked with twitching. But I'm no doctor...

Twitching is a normal part of exercise. Although you may not realize it you are getting a good workout when you play the banjo. Especially if you are new and are using muscles in ways you don't normally use them. I sometimes get twitching muscles after i go to the gym, in which case i usually make a shake out of kale, spinach, and frozen fruit, including a banana. Also i pop like 4 to 5 fish oil capsules a day they are great for your joints and soreness!

Try a different arm rest. Get a wood one that is at the same angle your arm is at. Those metal rests dig into your arm. You can make one or buy one.
