We are listening to the track by track of the new American Drive album (The New South).  The banjo player is really good. On their website, they have Josh Hymer listed, but on the track by track, they said that Josh didn't play on the album.  Does anyone know who actually played banjo on the new cd? Thanks!

Justin Jenkins, he has played for Grasstowne for some time, great picker!

Thanks! That makes sense, I love the banjo player from Grasstowne and listen to that cd all the time.

Justin is a great young man. He is a full time farmer, has a young family, and still finds the time to play the banjo professionally. He plays a JBS (Jerry Sloan tone ring) banjo.

No! Banjo player is the incredible Josh Hymer, an active BHO member. He's the real deal. I'm on iPhone, so can't say more ...

She asked about the ALBUM, not the current touring band lineup. (Good thing you couldn't say more! big)

We were just listening to Bluegrass Junction and Josh Hymer was there as the new banjo player, but they said he didn't play on the album. I was wondering who had the honor of taking over for JD.

Yes, I goofed. Looking at BHO inbetween quarters at son's game, and didn't read initial post correctly. Jenkins is on the recording as everyone knows ...

B on iPhone ...

While I don't know everything about the recording, I do know a little. I would venture to say that there are THREE banjo players on the project. There is a cut, a song about mining (can't remember the title and I don't have the CD in front of me) where if I'm not bad fooled, that Dwight is playing banjo. IF it's not Dwight, Justin has captured Dwight's tone and feel for banjo playing.

Just as assumption on my part.

And Robby, these folks on the Hangout here need to know that's you playing banjo on "Willow Creek Dam". Mighty fine banjo playing in my opinion.

Yikes....just looking at my post.  It says I joined in May 2003.....crap, ten years ago.....

How long does it take to be a banjo player......longer than that.

Justin Jenkins is an awesome banjo player. If you like him, check out his work with Grasstowne and before that, a couple of the Blue Moon Rising recordings. They are also a great bluegrass band.

Robby,

I knew you cut WCD on AD's CD (best cut), but didn't know that Dwight played on it.  I also had a stinkin' suspicion that even RS might have contributed on a cut or two on the five.  Whaddya think?

Don......

I am doing some investigating on this......will have the full story at 10:00. HA!  Don't chisel this in stone about Dwight, it just sounded like him to me......different than the other cuts done by Justin. As far as Ronnie playing on it, nope I don't hear any Ronnie on it. I hear Ronnie's INFLUENCE on it, but that's all. There is NONE of that fluidity that Ronnie has, or that blow your face off timing that Ronnie has. Not saying that Justin can't pick a banjo because he most certainly can........it's just that he nor anybody else plays like Ron Stewart. When and if I get an answer about Dwight, I might go a little further into this or maybe I should just shut up and quit now.

Thanks for the kind words Don.....you always make me feel great.

Ok.......I was wrong-wrong-wrong. Dwight is NOT playing on the cut (Son Of A Miner) that I thought he was, it is Justin on everything except Willow Creek Dam. My apologies to everyone that I gave an incorrect thought to.

Robby...no doubt Ronnie's influence and feel is all over it.  I'm guessing RS's influence will be on a lot of us from here fwd. Justin is a great picker, however, as you said, he "nor anybody else plays like Ron Stewart".

Wow, I picked this album up on the weekend (well downloaded it anyway). What a great album, good material, good picking and some really cool harmonies. I've been waiting for some good grass to come out, and finally between this and The Boxcars new cd I'll be happy for a while.

Robby, WCD....awesome track, awesome picking.

Cheers! DC

Hi guys I'm new to the hangout and had a friend who told me about this post. Just wanted to say that yes I was fortunate enough to play on the new American Drive cd. I have been a fan of Rickey and Dwight's singing for years now and was extremely proud to be apart of this record. I also wanted to say that Robby Boone in my opinion is a top notch underated player who did an incredible job on his part of the cd. Josh Hymer who is the current player for American Drive is the real deal and is a perfect fit for that band, again in my opinion. And also as for the Ron Stewart influence on my playing...he is a huge influence on me but so is J.D. and Earl. Ill agree totally that me or nobody else in this business can play or sound like Ron. He is who he is and has his own style and that's why he will be one of the greats ever. I myself as a player don't want to sound just like Ron or anybody else. I hope to take his influence along with others and somehow create my own style and sound. I apologize if I offend anybody in expressing my opinion. Again, I was glad to be apart of a good record and wish those guys the best. Thanks!
Justin Jenkins
