Morbid?
That is absoutely absurd! There has been literlly hundreds if not thousands of posts, comments, articles etc. about this banjo for decades now. Are we to assume that since he has passed it is now in bad taste to continue to discuss it? Actually I don't recall any disrespectfull remarks ever posted about his banjo including this particular topic. After all its only the most talked about banjo of all time. The awesome sounds that this banjo produced is the envy of all traditional pickers, not to mention manufactures who have tried to imitate it.
However, the overall general agreement is that the remarkable sounds of this particular banjo were more the result of the talents of the man that played it rather the banjo itself. The two ( Banjo & Earl) are permanetly joined together in music history. To my thinking any discussions regarding the remarkable sound of this instrument is directly related to and respectfull of the man that played it.
It is only natural that all "WE ALL" wonder and have our own opinons of what will or should happen to this instrument and no doubt will express some of them here? I don't consider that morbid. Many of us have deticated a lifetime of devotion to Earl and that banjo and that sound. Whatever the family decides it will no doubt not please everyone. But we should respect their decision regardless. They shared that banjo and Earl with us all their lives, let them seek clousure and Earls musical legancy as they see fit.

Some random thoughts:
- Randy should keep and cherish it unless he feels it should be donated to a museum
- A special album should be recorded with the top 10 or 12 players doing a song on Earl's banjo - similar to the Tone Poets CD that was done with the vintage Martin and Loar mandolin years ago.
- Randy or another family member or friend should play a tune on stage with it every year on Earl's birthday as a special tribute.
- Someone (Randy?)should write a song about it similar to Vince Gill's song about his Martin or John Denver's "This Old Guitar"

I really like the idea of the banjo staying in the Scruggs family.Randy could put in a museum on loan
and still maintain ownership.I believe people would like to actually see the banjo as they do Monroe's
mandolin and if Randy keeps it at home how many people would get to enjoy seeing it.I also think having
an album made with todays top pickers such as Mills,Ingram,Crowe and maybe Sonny (if he could be talked
out of retirement) and others would be a great idea. But please no melodic stuff on Earl's banjo.Just my thoughts on
this historic axe.
