If you're in New York, or passing through, you might want to take a lesson from the incomparable Ryan Cavanaugh. I've been taking lessons from him for the past few months (I have the great luck to live half a block from him).
You probably already know what an astonishing player he is. A total master of bluegrass banjo and jazz as well. It's kind of like getting to take lessons from Earl Scruggs, Bill Keith and John Coltrane, all at once. He has answered for me what others seem to shy from: Just what a musician in either genre is thinking as he improvises. He's changed my thinking and playing already. And an incredibly friendly and welcoming guy to boot.

I'm sure glad you guys hooked up, and only a half a block away, who'd have thought that. Next time you go over, remind him about Grey Fox. We hope to see both of you there again this year. This is gonna be a good one, I can feel it in my bones.

I took a lesson from Ryan in February when I was passing through NYC, and it blew my mind.
He's obviously an amazing picker, but additionally, he's a super insightful dude and mellow dude.
Great lesson, and wellllllll worth it.
I'll definitely try to make that happens again next time I'm in town, and highly recommend it for anyone who has a working knowledge of theory or is interested in playing in an out of the box manner.
