I am putting a skin head on my old supertone banjo I just acquired, I am getting an unmounted skin, I have put them on Bodhrans before but never a banjo. The flesh ring (I think thats what it's called) that came off the old head was not connected, meaning it was a stiff wire ring that overlapped slightly at the ends. Should it be connected or soldered together or let it remain loose and overlapped? I want to know before I start. The reason I am using an unbound hear is the shell is slightly warped or ovaloid, not sure is bound head would fit.

The flesh hoop does not have to be joined at the end. But personally, I would not want it to overlap.
I would shorten it so that there is no overlap - then join the ends with clear plastic tape to hold them together during the mounting process. After the hide is stretched and dried - the skin itself will hold everything in place.

I get a small piece of shrink wrap - hold the ends together then heat the shrink wrap to hold the ends together.
