Sadly - - this is not the "more effective" method.  All of the recent (and past) mass shootings have occurred in that very environment (i.e. - - "gun free" zones.)  The law abiding citizen will adhere to the rules, whereas the one bent on destruction will not.  The only thing that a "gun free" zone guarantees (to me) is the fact that there is an unarmed populace there at the mercy of whatever crackpot who might decide to "attack them where they are safe".

I have no answers on how to "weed out" the crack pots who initiate violence on innocent people but until a viable method is found, I'm not in favor of "gun free" zones since those venues seem to attract the miscreants like a mouse to the cheese.  With the possibility of guns being present (other than the ones carried by the intruder) is an entity to be considered and very real probability, the intruder takes his violent "message" elsewhere where he'll encounter "no interference".  I fail to understand why this simple fact is so hard for some folks to grasp.

This may appear to be a Draconian suggestion - but the term zero tolerance should be more than a statement of intent it needs to be the accepted practice.  i.e. walk through any door or gate that separates the gun free area from a normal area with a firearm then after one single verbal warning the miscreant should be met with lethal force.

Just to get it straight:   Both guns and cars are tools.   But the basic purpose of a car is transportation and the basic purpose of a gun is to kill.

There's a slight difference between the two if you look closely.

Be careful - remember that the basic purpose of a Boeing 747 is transportation as well - yet the largest mass murder in American history happened on 9/11 and in that case, the weapons of choice were Boeing 747s.
