Polle, if that is your name
I never asked you for advice, not interested in your advice. Not interested in being part of your club.
I have nothing personal against you, you have your own problems and there is nothing I can do nor want to do about it.

Polle
It's great to hear that you're taking up plectrum!
I look forward to hearing how this wonderful instrument is supposed to sound!

This thread is retarded. Grown men bickering over what year a banjo was invented, who Buddy Wachter would rather have lunch with. Just stupid.

Please gather the banjo fans along, it should be a lot of fun. The band is called "Planet Banjo", rather like the old Banjomania group from the US in the 80's.By the way, I'm getting a new model Pietsch MasterVox this year. It will be white, like a Montana, special light weight Huber tone ring and stainless steel frets, like my other ones. If it is finished by July I'll bring it along.
Sean,
I´m looking forward meeting and experiencing you once again. I´ll be playing two gigs myself at the festival. Do btw. have the large jam on Sunday in mind - if you´ll stay that long - it´s really great fun - and you´ll meet musicians and friends from all parts of the world.
Also - your Planet Banjo band sounds indeed interesting - I´ll sit in the first row at one of your concerts, I hope - I´ll get the festival program within a week or two - I can then plan a mix of my own gigs and the "must" concerts - LOL!
Plus - a new Pietsch - that could be extra interesting. I did btw. try to purchase your first Mastervox in the autumn (as I also purchased your first Pietsch - the NPU) - on behalf of a mutual buddy - but I wasn´t acting fast enough - Jackie/Buddy sold it in a few days.
I hope, that you and your family have now settled well in UK.
See you soon - regards
Polle

In my opinion there are not enough plectrum banjo players around to maintain a vital conversation... and a dead or underused group tends to fade away as people become bored with its inactivity. I think maintaining it as part of a larger group is important to avoid that inactivity.... But whatever form I would participate.

John,
However - sometimes you can in one of these long-lasting, stupid and bland threads find one or two postings containing a lot of wisdom - do always keep an eye and your mind open for this.

@ Polle - you're right, there's generally at least some good info, but it's a pain to have to wade through the bs to find it.
@ original question - to me it just doesn't make sense to have a separate plectrum group, however the sub-forums as theyre arranged now don't make a lot of sense to me either. I would rather see everything subbed up by musical style; bluegrass, clawhammer/old-time, jazz, irish, & other. On about half my gigs I'm banging on a guitar banjo but my strumming hand is doing the same thing that I do on tenor. Where do I go for pointers or inspiration? The 4-string section, of course. Then, however, there's quite a bit of Irish material that, while lovely and informative, I have no interest in. Then there are the setup and maintenance forums, full of info about bluegrass setups and men waxing poetic nonsense about pre-war magic and pot-metal mojo. I don't care about any of that either. I've noticed that most 4-stringers dont seem to post in those threads as most of the 4-string style setup threads and such are posted in the 4-string section. There's just so much crossover between plectrum and tenor in terms of technique and so many of us that benefit from being able to easily parse all of the jazz-pertinent threads under one sub, that further segregating them just to mollify some folks that need to feel special just seems to be counter-productive.
We're already in a bubble, arguing about topics that 99.9999% of people don't even know exist. What good further cloistering could do is beyond me.

Since he joined this forum, John has often said exactly what I wanted to say, and he has consistently said it much better than I could.
Well, he's done it again.

There is a lot of garbage on this site, as there is on any internet forum... It is your job to sort through it and accept or ignore a particular thread. But to throw insults at others says more about you than them.

Seriously?
I find that you usually have something useful or interesting to say, John, as with the middle of your post, but it is rare from anyone to complain about the bs in postings and then go on to produce it himself in the same post.
It is the bs of the kind that is so richly proffered by you in your post (second bold), with no basis but just a side swipe or bash to those with a different perspective, that is the most counter productive.
How unfortunate your choice.
