Can anybody tell me how much these banjos are making on the market today.

Ive come across one in mint condition ,re plated but with clover holes, not f-holes.Serial number I have yet to get.

What would be a fair price?

There was a # 9 on this site for $19,500 that sold and there is currently a # 7. Maybe this will give you some ideas.

You might want to move this to the Shopping Advice forum rather than Building, Setup and Repair.

Is that one a Groton-made B&D?  Or is it a Gretsch?

It looks like a Gretsch to me - but I'm not an expert.

This prompted me to do a little research...and Ouch! or Yay! I had no idea some of my instruments were in this price range. I guess the excellent banjo market is doing well. I will return to this page to find out answers from others.I just bought another B&D #3 for under $3000 and cannot stop playing it! Have two gigs this weekend..and am very very happy with it.

Hello, this is a Gretch # 6. Another one for sale for under 2.000,- euros at banjoworld.de/Sale1721.htm
A Groton b& d #6 will be at least 4 times that amount...

A mint Bacon Symphonie Silver Bell Ne Plus Ultra like this - built by Gretsch mid/late 60s - will sell for appr. USD 2,500.

A mint B&D Silver Bell No. 6 Ne Plus Ultra - built by Bacon in the 20s/30s - will, depending on customization and provenance - sell for USD 15-25,000.

These banjos can´t in any way be compared - they have only partly the names in common. Gretsch purchased the right to use these early 1940.

Let me repeat - this is a Bacon Symphonie Silver Bell Ne Plus Ultra - built by Gretsch - in feb. 1966 (given by Gretsch´s last SN sequence MYNNN).

These banjos are sought for their flashy looks only - they are very poorly built - I have 3 troublesome examples in my workshop for now - with bowed and warped necks, very week rims, very poor fit of the tone ring etc. etc.

Polle Flaunoe - Posted - 10/06/2012:  01:03:10

PS!

This banjo has later been equipped with a poor fitted and non-engraved cast tone ring. Do notice the thin rim.
