Collective wisdom,
I have a gourd banjo, with a skin head that is tacked and glued to the body. The skin has begun to stretch and sag under the bridge. Is there a good technique for tightening up this head without removing it? I know that drummers often heat goatskin drum heads; does it make sense to heat this thing?

Heating is a very temporary fix. Try a hair dryer and see if you like the results..

If all else fails, try a taller bridge for times when high humidity causes the tacked head to sag.

I have the same problem on my gourd banjo. You know what? It's a gourd banjo. It doesn't hurt the sound at all. If it were a tubaphone, I'd worry.

1) It sounds better with the head taut; 2) Good to fix the problem before the banjo becomes unplayable.
