I am the new owner of this beauty, The banjo was purchased through a relative of Stanley's. The story goes that in the spring of 1982 the original owner asked Floyd Hicks (Stanley's brother) for a banjo. Floyd delivered this one. It is unsigned.
By all accounts, Floyd's work was extremely crude and generally of low quality. I feel confident in saying that Floyd did not make this banjo. Comparing this banjo with examples from Stanley's early commercial days (ca. 1970), I feel confident in saying that this banjo is certainly one of Stanley's. I won't go through all of the details of how I came to this conclusion on this thread, but knowledgeable folks of Stanley's work are in agreement with this conclusion.
The banjo is made of black walnut. One of the tuners appears to have been replaced at some point with a cherry one. The banjo is unusual in that it has frets. They appear to be original to the instrument, but who knows. The skin is groundhog. It needs a new nut (it's broken) and a bridge.

It certainly appears to be a Stanley Hicks banjo in all respects. Nice catch!

Wow - an heirloom for sure. I love those old crude things that take you back in banjo history. I wonder what the gear ratio was in the tuners!!

I'm digging the scribe line on the back for screw placement. I don't know why I like details like this - it seems to add the human element, that somebody actually sat there and did the work.
