I'm upgrading the tuners on my Hopkins Woodie from 5 Star to Waverly. 1st to 4th pegs pose no problems but the 5th string peg is different. It'sa 5 Star 4:1 tuner and I can see some splines in the shaft as it enters the neck. Is this peg glued in or just "hammered" in to place?

How about extracting it? I propose padding the neck with some thick leather and levering it out gently, taking care to avoid any timber pulling up with it, then tapping in the Waverly peg.

I am quite handy with tools and have a well set up workshop but have little experience in banjo neck work.

Any advice would be very welcome.

Some are gluedin there, and I have read where luthiers have headed the peg with a soldering iron, and the heat will melt the glue to make it easier to pull out without wood damage.  There is little chance you can tell if glue is in the hole, so it's a good precaution to preventing neck damage.

When installing the new fith string tuner, I use a "C" clamp and two blocks of wood, one of which is drilled to go over the button shaft. Gently clamp the tuner in place, no shock load, easy to control.

Ironically, just last week I posted a thread about this same question and got basically the same answer. Take off the knob, and with a small hammer lightly tap the top of the tuner. That make release the glue bond. If not, CAREFULLY apply heat with a soldering iron to the base. That will release the glue bond and it should slide right out. Worked for me.
