Jim, it's been a Jim Reed summer study session for me, so thank you.  Your way of playing this tune makes for nice listening and you've got that Celtic feel.  When I played Red Haired Boy I found the words that go to the same tune called Little Beggarman, so sometimes I sing it.  Maybe the red-haired boy grew up to be a hobo.

Love this tune, sort of a theme song for me being a Red Haired Boy myself and yes the carpet matches the curtains so I'm legit. Our band Paupers Abbey play this tune regularly and have recorded it. We couple it with June Apple, the two tunes seem to go well together!

Jim : great relaxed Reedstyle version.

Banjowik : Great combo with fiddle and easy to dance to.

Janet : Pleased to hear it sung and I noted how (like quite a few Irish songs) it's quite difficult to get the wordphrasing such that it fits into the melody; you did it well. Must have taken some practice over the years.



This is 1 of the few tunes that I find myself playing at sessions of different genres - BG, OT and Celtic ; Blackberry Blossom and Whiskey Before Breakfast are 2 others that spring to mind.

In fact we have a local guy that does a good of singing words to Whisky Before Breakfast.

attached is a version I cooked up a while back...

I love these "post yours" threads because of how well it showcases the creativity and unique approaches of the posters.  I hope the thread keeps expanding, it's a favorite tune of mine and I really enjoy seeing the range of possibilities, and arrangements that wouldn't have occurred to me.

Also, Janet: awesome job on the vocal.  My tongue would have been tied all up in knots trying to get that out.  Kudos.

Danny : good version - and a wonderful example of how to ignore distractions and keep on with the show; amazing concentration or very well evolved ear/brain selective filter in operation here !

Nice to hear a 2nd clawhammer version  too.

PIckinchik's guitar/banjo version has a lovely laid back feel to it.

I just did a 1-pass version in Audacity using my headset microphone. Mine is in key of A but played out of open G tuning (i.e. no capo)

I developed this version because, at local Celtic sessions, this is usually played within a set of 3 tunes, the other 2 tunes being in key of D or G. I didn't want to lose several bars  by fitting and checking a capo  (which is what was happening when I originally played  it with capo on 2nd fret playing melodically out of a G-scale or chord shapes).

 I thought up untill the banks lost my money for me I was getting close to retiring but it's gone full circle and i'm back working long shifts just like when I had a small family to surpport it' s a good job we have a banjo outlet like this

Thought I'd take a stab at this.  Certainly took liberties with the melody and I put a different cadence to it.  Sort of sounds Reelish or Jigish or one of those types, I think.

Sounds reel Jigish!. Sounds wild  in 6! I tried to play along in this time sig and its Tough so kudos on keepin that melody going.. Enjoyed that "jamout" in the middle there. Came up with a good ending as well.

Love that Red Haired Boy jig; next time we play this in a Celtic jam, I'll attempt to add a variant like this at the end - assuming I can master it and keep the rhythm going for at least AABB.

Well here goes...mistakes and all, at about 6 months of playing. Actually way above my speed limit but the others wanted me to include a banjo part. I'm on bass, fiddle and banjo.

So here is my first post of my playing in all its confused glory. It was also the first thing any of us had recorded over the net.

Thanks Terry, John and Chris.  Enjoyed learning this one and stumbling on to the different approach, even if it meant stumbling during the recording at times.
