I play clawhammer, and am having a banjo set up soon.  Nylgut strings.

1/8" seems good to me with steel strings, so I am thinking 5/32" for nylguts?

I suggested 3/16" to Bart Veerman when I ordered my bridge,  but he thought that was "wickedly high".

thanks folks for all the info.

I use Chris Sands' medium weight strings with 1/8" at the 12th fret.  Tried Nylgut with 1/8", don't remember any problems with them.  However, I went back to Chris Sands strings because they were a bit heavier and I liked the higher tension.

I am at 3 mm under first string and 3 1/2 mm under the fourth string to top of 12th fret; that is about 1/8" and 5/32" respectively.  Scale is 24" and string tension about 9 pounds per string.
