I started with banjo ukes many many years ago, and still have a couple of pre-war english models. Had a really inexpensive uke for years ....not much better than a toy, but after excursions into guitar and 5 strings, got a decent solid wood concert uke about 5 years ago. Its really great with nylgut strings and just lurks around the house waiting to be picked up for a quick tune. Ukes are such happy instruments. They should be available for free on the National Health Service. Greetings to all fellow uke players.

Guitalele update:

I've just received the latest Sweet***er catalogue in the mail today, and it shoes a "guilele" by Cordoba, a company that gives good value (more so nowadays, with the depressed Euro). SW lists it at $250, but it's an acoustuc/electric model, with some sort of pickup. Has anyone seen/tried one? How does the un-miked sound compare to the Yamaha? Does the pickup capture the delicate sound that the Yamaha produces? Is it worth the 150% price hike?

By the way, I had my little guitalele with me today when I had lunch at a Chinese restaurant here in town, and some techies at the next table asked me whether the gig bag contained a ukulele or a mandolin. "Neither," I said, taking the instrument out to show them. Well, you know how it is; once the thing's in your hands... I ran through a few variations of 'Fly Me to the Moon', and when I stopped everyone in the restaurant applauded, including the waiter!

WHo needs amplification, anyway?
