Neat!

However, the assessor stated that he had a suspicion that the metal parts were re-plated at some point.  Does gold plating wear easily...I mean should there be wear marks on the parts?  I thought gold didn't tarnish, so wouldn't the parts still shine regardless of the age?

I can understand how he could tell it was re-finished, but how do you think he could tell it was re-plated?

Gold plating is very soft, and gets worn off right down to the underlying metal after a few years of normal use.    The armrest, tailpiece, tuner shafts, and edge of the tension hoop in particular nearly always show heavy wear after 80 years or so of playing, and the fact that this banjo had been played regularly but showed no signs of wear was a giveaway that it had been re-plated fairly recently.

I short; an 80-year-old banjo develops a distinctive patina, and the Road Show banjo didn't have that patina.

I will say that that was one pretty banjo, though.    approve
