I just have a cheap tenor to play around with, it currently has a 1/2 in. on it now, what is the the most common height?

I prefer 5/8th and will reset the neck to achieve it. But on a cheapie, why bother!

There is no specific height for a tenor banjo bridge, it all depends on the instrument. If the action is playable at 1/2", then a replacement bridge should probably be 1/2". If you get buzzing and the wrong note as you play up the neck (towards the bridge) then you will need a higher bridge, say 9/16" but there is a caveat.
Your banjo may have a warped or bent neck, the head may be too loose, or your bridge may not be 1/2" (so measure.) There are other factors, but it all comes down to playability, whatever works, works.
