Hi all,
Got two old banjos
barratt & wittner and ssstewart both built around 1890.
Since few months I love a lot a lot a lot putting guitar nylon strings on. Why : the sound is great, the touch is great (my humble opinion).
Of course they are thicker than usual banjo strings. (I'm using Savarez strings)
But, tuners are harders, and I wonder if the neck is not suffering due to tension ? I hope not because I can't imagine playing with different stuff these days.

I have found that nylon strings, though capable of producing tensions similar to steel strings, will function satisfactorily at lower tension than steel strings. You can find the formula and information in attachment below that will allow you to estimate string tension on your instruments. You will get satisfactory results with nylon strings at tensions as low as nine pounds per string.

You can put together your own custom string sets using single strings of the sizes you decide on. For example, on a 24 inch scale I have 0.022", 0.027", 0.032", 0.024"w, 0.022", each of which develops less than 10 pounds tension.

hey thanks for the answer. It's a bit complex to me...
I can't define what is the tension of the strings. savarez give no information. I got usually the Red one (520 R) and I'll try to switch to the white one (520B)

The Blue Set is between White and Red in tension. The Yellow Card set is Super High Tension. I live in the US and those are the only Saverez strings ever available to me so I might be missing out on one or more different sets.
