i have a skin head that is split along the edge.  i figure experimenting with it won't hurt anything now.

do people recycle these by putting them on smaller banjos?  that's what i would like to do with mine, will that work if i try to do that?

easily done, but an 11inch head with a split on the rim may only be big enough for a banjo uke once you stretch it.

So not on a ten inch banjo mandolin then?

Doubtful it could be installed don a ten inch; you need about an extra inch diameter just to reach the flesh hoop all round, and another inch to return to point of beginning.  That's 12 inches with no extra to get ahold of and pull wrinkles out.  You can use it for an eight inch pot or a mountain banjo.

I recycle all the vellums (skin heads) I replace. The 10/11" ones go on either banjo ukes or Zither style banjos ( British made). One I replace the ones from the ukes or Zithers, there really isn't anything much smaller that I can fit them on. One of the great things about OLD heads ( Jos Rogers etc) is that they are really thin. On many old banjos etc some of the newer skins ( economy ones ) are just too thick and present real difficulty in installing. The gaps between the rim and the tension hoops on some instruments are just not large enough.

You can get a little more diameter out of them with a tackhead design (or in this case a Panhead).  This banjo is a 10" pot out of a 12 1/2" tackhead skin I messed up the first time, but I had plenty to spare.  I think you could easily get 9 1/2 inches out of an 11" banjo head.

Banjonz has an excellent point re the thickness of the skins,i have encountered this problem even on some older heads.
