I saw Dirk play live once at The Focal Point in Maplewood, MO near St. Louis... about 7 years ago...

Great performance... all the local folkies were there...

I didn't see any You Tubed vids on that tune...

I assume also that you're looking for clawhammer?

Sweet tune.  Also called "Sweet Susan," according to Jeff Titon's book.  Yes, it's in G.  I used to have the Appalachian Picking Society CD but can't find it now.  Maybe on an old iPod.  I think I could tab a version if I had the tune.  I'll keep my eyes open for it.

"Sweet Susan" is sweet as played on the myspace link. Very pretty and worth learning.... if someone would be kind enough to post a tab!

I got a copy of the CD and of "Susan's Gone."  I'm now convinvced that Dirk is up-picking, maybe two-finger style.  I started some clawhammer tab, but the tune is irregular (from a dance tune perspective anyway).  By that I mean that tabbing in 4/4 leaves a half-measure at the end of the A and B Parts.  Maybe I'll try it in 2/4 to avoid that problem.  I'll post something here if I come up with anything worthwhile.

Well, here's some clawhammer tab you can try.  The tune is a bit crooked and quirky, so feel free to make it your own.  Like all of my tab, this is what I hear in this tune today, and it surprises me how I hear different things with the passage of time.  I have two tabs - one with drop thumb and one with pull-offs rather than drop thumb.  I didn't add chords (yet, anyway) since the guitar seems to switch between G and Em at the end of phrases with no pattern I could discern easily. If you need a Midi file for that tab, send me an email through the Hangout.

For reference, this tune played by Dirk Powell is on the Appalachian Picking Society CD and is available from iTunes and Amazon (CD or single).  The tune is also on Dirk's MySpace web site (link in message above).

Oh man, do I love this song! Thanks so much for sharing the tab.

Thanks for the note, surburbancowboy.  After all of the discussion about the tune, I wasn't sure anyone ended up wanting the tab for it.  It is a sweet tune.
