Herb is more of a pop player. He was a good trumpet player but not as serious a jazz musician (at least in his commercial recordings) as Brubeck. All goo.

I'm another long-time Brubeck fan. I've found his work delightfully challenging to learn because he worked with prime numbers above three as time signatures with prime numbers as one or both of the numerators and/or denominators, like 5/4, 7/11 or 7/13. He'd have one player working in one beat, and then improvise over it in another.

Here are the two melodies that confuse me when I hearing them playing but not very often [which band] ‘A taste of Honey’ and ‘Take Five’ as I thought there’re very similar, but there is room to argue I suppose. I’ve checked there is an age difference of 15 years or so between them , I wonder if they ever met to improvise, who knows? I am not a great fan of his Jazz  [Burbeck] I find it confusing and unmelodious [all jazz?} I would choose Erb Alpert over him, his ‘Spanish Flea, I like best,  Erb Alpert is still around at 79 Wiki says, could be he’s still playing trumpet...somewhere.

Dream a Little Dream of Me

Emily:

  Jazz will become less confusing as you become more musically knowledgeable. As you learn to play their pieces, you'll come to better understand what the various artists were doing. If you want to start on jazz pieces, try listening to or learning Duke Ellington (Satin Doll, Fly Me to the Moon, Don't Get Around Much Anymore, Willow Weep for Me, Take the 'A' Train, etc.). They seem like simple songs, but watch for the way he varies things by moving a phrase up or down chromatically (by semitones). Listen to Glen Miller's introduction to In the Mood, and try to spot how he anticipates Dave Brubeck by using semuitone fills to alter the syncopation of what otherwise would be a standard 12-bar blues into a swing tune. Tal Farlow's lightning-fast solos are also instructive; watch for the way he uses chord inversions to change relatively simple tunes (like Gershwin's Summertime) into moody cadenzas by re-stacking his harmonies into minor sixths and minor sevenths. Don't worry, you'll catch on, and the learning experience will be stimulating fun.

I believe I Can Fly'

A different idea of Jazz  then the  prelude to "In the Mood" is at  best sympathetic with the mood?...for me Jazz in its extremity is like a tray of cutlery tossed high up into the air, and someone says "Hey listen to THat" isn't it wonderful!  when all hits the floor [not meaning to sound unkind].

Here is "Black Coffee with 'Peggy Lee'  Jazz with a singer is okay for myself, meanwhile you can have the tray of cutlery!  ..
