Calico owners,
I just bought a 2006 Deering Calico from Elderly. It doesn't look like its ever been used or setup, doesn't even have spikes. I have to start mine from scratch, so I ask..
What is your favorite setup?
Any favorite bridges (I've liked Snuffys)?
Head pitch?

I’ve probably gone back and forth between the 5-star and Deering head a least three or four times in first couple years I owned mine. Finally settled on the 5-Star. Neutral co-rods is an absolute MUST or my Calico turns into a choked beer can. I use GHS 150 strings, and currently a home made 3/4” bridge... but have a Sosebee in the mail as I type. I keep the head at 91 on my new drum dial. Before that I did my best to keep it at an A. Make sure your tailpiece is not down hard on the top of the tension hoop, that also makes mine sound like a beer can. Just a few months ago I got a Fults tailpiece for mine, and really like it. When you get it right that Calico will sing like no other banjo!

I have a 1998 Blond Calico with a 5/8" Snuffy Smith Crowe spaced bridge and a Mike Rowe Paintsville tailpiece. Standard Deeing head with a drum dial reading of 91. Spikes at 7, 8 and 10. I use American Made Banjo Standard Strings (10-11-12.5-20w-10). Sounds Great!

Back to the original Remo Deering logo head, 92.5 on the drum dial, Sosebee 3/4” Crowe bridge, Fults Cumberland with xyz tailpiece. Neutral co-rods. GHS 150’s. Best it’s ever been.
