Jim Reed is a prime example of a creative banjo player who beautifully melds 3-finger styles with old-time music. For this reason, many old-time musicians will be interested in this new interview with Jim and the tributes written by Hangout members Don Borchelt, Janet Burton, Don Couchie and Donnie Gill. Hope you enjoy. -- PauL

Paul, Thanks for the interview on Jim Reed. Really enjoyed it. Jim is a gem, always loved hearing his playing on the BHO, he's the real deal and the kind of person that makes me want to log onto the BHO each day to check out whats going on. Met him at Clifftop last year but missing getting to pick, sure hope to this year.

They just don't get any better then Jim Reed I see him often in the chatroom and he is always willing to help me with my Banjo tunes and believe me I need help LOL. The world would be a better place if it was filled with good hearted people like Jim Reed. I thank you Jim for all you have done for me and will be doing for me because I will always need help buddy.

Thanks Paul for an excellent article. And special thanks to Janet and the three Dons for some excellent writing covering Jim's background. And thanks most of all to Jim, a tremendous picker and resource for us here at the BHO.

That's a terrific interview! And those tributes are every bit as terrific, as well!
A great read - well worth the time, indeed.

Being honored, as Jim is here, is a rare event in a person's life. Jim will always remember this and with that big heart of his, he'll be smiling inside and out. Maybe we can get a photo of it, as his smile has been rare, too. Usually we just see his hands and his Gibson.
It's a privilege to know both Jim and Paul, as well as all the other Hangout members who participate in this miraculous invention of Eric's called Banjo Hangout. I'd like to repeat myself from yesterday's original response:
WE
U JIM!
Paul, you done real, real good.
Janet ![]()
P.S. Jim, I'm listening to your songs and they'll make a fine summer learning project.

I really enjoyed reading that and agree with just about all I read in the tributes too.
I feel like I know Jim well, having first met him in the BHO chatroom about 3 years ago and talking to him regularly that way - and I too was honoured by having a Jim Reed tune named after me.
Hope to meet him in the flesh before too long.

Thanks Paul for bringing the article to reality for us all to enjoy. Jim Reed is a man's man and there are few left in the world today like Jim. I was very honored to be asked to paticipate in this wonderful event and even more, a bit hungry to help get it done so the world can share in such a beautiful persons life. Jim is a dear friend of mine and I someday hope to grow into the kind of man he is. Jim Reed is a living legend and his banjo skills are simply amazing. Thanks Jim for letting me into your world and I hope to spend some time with you this summer. Friends forever Jim!!!!

Thank you Paul for shining another bright light on one of my banjo heroes; the world needs to know about Jim Reed. Thank you Jessica for sharing your heart and love for your dad and his music.* And thank you Jim for being the man you are and for showing us how to play that thang!

I'm glad to see this thread in the Old Time Banjo category. Jim's love and understanding of old time music really shines in his playing. The beautiful thing about it is that he continues to contribute to the music as well as preserve a lot of music that would otherwise be forgotten. For me, it doesn't matter so much about style; Clawhammer, Two-finger, Three-finger, as it does about feeling. Jim gives it 100% and leaves no doubt to richness of the heritage that brings this music forward. No matter what style banjo anyone plays, there is something to enjoy in this music and there is something to enjoy in Jim's playing. It's that honesty, sincerity, and meticulous attention to detail that makes Jim's playing a joy to listen to.

That was awesome!
Helicopter pilot? I think that's just as impressive as your banjo playing Jim. Nothing but respect for what you've done in your life!

I think I could listen the Whiskey Before Breakfast tucked in at the end of that interview a thousand times and not be bored or disinterested.
Same goes for everything I've heard Jim play.
Neat interview, Paul et al, and great playing, Jim.
