This question is about a Bodhran, which is a handheld drum that is pretty similar to an open-back banjo (without the neck, of course).
I got a Shopworn drum from Elderly at a substantial discount. The goat skin head is stained with what looks like mold. I am wondering how to clean it. I figure the same thing must have happened to countless banjo heads, so maybe one of you can help me out.
Also, I've seen some heads that are textured and end up translucent, and maybe that process would work, like it would take off the top layer or something. I'm not sure if that's a good idea or not, and I'm just throwing it out there.

Can you post a photo? The staining may be natural.
Some goat hide has a combination of translucent and white areas. This is called "mottled." It is a nautural occurence and varies from one piece of hide to the next.

I've cleaned quite a few moldy/mildew skin heads with a solution of bleach cut by 40-50% water. Dampen a rag, & wipe the head. Wait just a minute or two & then wipe it down with a damp rag of pure water ( do this rinse w/ pure water 2 or 3 times). Do this to both sides. Be careful not to soak the head, just use damp wipes.

You can also try cleaning with a white pencil eraser or sanding with fine sandpaper.
