been looking around at that specific model and notice a lot are offered that are new stock and do not have a frailing scoop-is there a reason for that?

are these models designed for folks who only play over the head?

Lots of folks play over the neck without a scoop and some even use those frets up there.

Bart Reiter has only in the past couple years started doing scoops, and does probably half his new instruments that way. Of course the original Vega Regents never had a scooped neck, nor did any original Vega model. It's nice that we now have the option. I'm on my 4th Reiter, consequently a Regent, and this is the first one I've had that he did a scoop on. I also have a 1925 Vega without a scoop and do, as mbanza suggests, play over the neck and also use the last frets,(on occasion).

I would suggest that maybe the instruments your seeing listed on websites are old stock,or old pictures, such as what Elderly shows. If you see a Reiter with a fyberskyn head and no scoop, you can pretty much bet it's either NOS or an old stock picture, as he is primarily using Renaissance heads and scooped necks these days.

I think the non-sccoped neck is standard on the Regent.  But you occasionally see them both ways.

I have a 2001 Regent A-scale without a scoop.  This may validate Pastorharry's comment about a scoop being a more recently added feature.

One clue is the descrition on this dealer website.  It is a scooped Regent ... identified as "non standard on this model."

Nice site John...intresting to note that all of Bart's banjos listed did have the infamous "frailing scoop"....could this be a trend..... ;^)
