Finally found some time to edit more JD Crowe footage from the vault.

This time he and the boys are playing Down The Road which features some stellar backup.<p>

For anybody that wants to slow these videos down click the "Normal" button on the player and you can adjust the speed.

Did you notice the look of disappointment at about :50, where he apparently didn't play something like he wanted--but his "flub" was imperceptible to everyone else.

I  hear that flub and I love that look on JD's face. He makes so few of them, that when he does it must really bug him. To think of all he's done for bluegrass and how long his career has been, that he still cares so much that he gets irritated with himself when something goes awry.

Sonny Osborne has the exact same expression when he botches a pull off or something on  the medley that you can watch on YouTube. This is an absolute tour de force of tasteful Scruggs playing and he is at the peak of his iconic powers. And yet even the banjo gods are apparently human. Even if only for one single note every other leap year!

Sean,
A great post. Guys like Sonny and JD, I could listen to their back up all day long. How did you get the back up to be so prominent in your editing. I try to pull out the Scruggs back up and can't get it out front as much as I would like to be real clear.

Played this thing about 10 times and the flub is around 0:48, but try as I might my ears don't hear the 'mistake'. It must have had to do with where he wanted to go, rather than where he wound up. I watch another banjo "treasure" play almost weekly and of course he misses a note or riff here and there, but I always learn a lot when he works it through and how he does it. When it is 'imperceptible to the public' I can tell it went wrong because he ALWAYS smiles as he works through it and looks around to see how the other players dealt with it. There is a lot to be learned from a pro when you know him or her well enough to read their face.

 A couple of weeks ago a good friend (mando player, but I like him anyway) and I were watching a this friend of ours and they struck up a swing tune, we both know how much he loves swing and we were watching as he was chomping at the bit to step in and take a break. Over 50 years on stage and he was like a little kid waiting his turn! What a treat, it is such a privilege to watch these guys well enough to 'read' them.

 JD is a fantastic guy and a true treasure. Can't wait to see him again in July.

I love watching his right-hand fingers, I find it fascinating that they always look so stiff and like he couldn't possibly playing so fast, but he is...and with such accuracy on top of that.

The speed button on youtube is something fairly new. I've only recently noticed it and it's not available on every video which is odd too. My guess is that their still working out the kinks. You may want to either try a different browser or update your flash plugin. I'm using Safari on a Mac and the Normal button shows up but I just tried it on a Windows 7 machine using IE9 and there is no Normal button.

If you really want to slow it down you may end up having to download the video from youtube and play it back with Quicktime or some other player with speed controls.

We both have a black banjo case that says "The Gibson" on the top.

I've been working on the back up lick that JD plays in the sally goodin clip.... its the bass run at about 2:16... anybody have tab for that?  got some ideas and something harsh that works but nothing that sweet....
