Hi Folks:
I installed one of Elderly's $9 calfskin heads on a cheapo banjo I'm fixing up. The heads are totally translucent. When it dried, however, I got an opaque white ring all the way around my banjo rim. So, now the head is translucent in the center, but with an uneven 1/4" white border where the head meets the rim.
What causes this? Is it normal? I don't really like this look, and may take off the head....
(This is not an anti-Elderly rant; I'm always pleased with their service there.) Just trying to figure out what happened.

This is a normal result of the fibers in the skin stretching, & is not an indication of weakening. (I've even heard bongo & conga players say that the whitening of the edge shows the right amount of tensioning).

Hmmm, that's too bad. Does this happen with all translucent skin heads? Or just budget ones?

Whitening of the edge is not an indication of a cheap or bad head. I've found this happens to all the translucent heads I''ve mounted, both calf & goat, to some degree.

These heads sound great. You are seeing a natural skin colouration. I believe the pure white heads are bleached or treated in some way which adds to the cost. Elderly sells those too about $25 I think.

Is there any way to stretch the rest of the head, so that it also turns white? (I doubt I would do this, just curious....)
