Hey folks,

"Groundhogpeggy" over at the fiddle hangout has started a "virtual fiddle festival", which I thought folks over here might like to get in on. They're choosing one tune a month to work on from the tunes on the old-time jam site and then folks are to post a recording whenever they're ready (on this site in this thread, youtube, wherever) before the Feb. 15 deadline. To help encourage participation, I'll be entering the names of anyone who posts their version into a drawing to win a lifetime membership to the old-time jam site.

This month's tune is Hop High Ladies (aka "Miss McCloud's Reel" or "Uncle Joe") in the key of G - a great jam classic. Don't be afraid to sing this one, either - if you post a version with you playing AND singing, I'll enter your name twice in the drawing :)

So get crackin!

This seems like a fun idea - the link up with the Fiddlehangout thread is nice too - so I thought that I'd have a go. Here's a laid back version of Hop High Ladies that I worked out last night (it's got an added 'hanging' bar in both the A part and the B part) and recorded this morning - there's some off stage sniffling by my youngest daughter, whose voice is also audible at the very start of the recording (warning me that she was a bit sniffly, as indeed she was).

Wow, that was excellent. Love the laid back quality to it - sounds great like that. 

That's the great thing about fiddle tunes. Slow them down and change the rhythm just a tad and you've almost got a brand new tune.

Thanks! I'm enjoying following the fiddlehangout thread, as it's interesting to get more of a sense of another instrument. What you say about fiddle tunes is spot on: the blend of creativity-within-constraints with the pleasure of playing an instrument is a large part of what makes the activity of playing the music so great.

Time is almost out!

Attached is my submission, just in the nick of time. I decided to play around with a different tuning for this one - I'm in fDGCD, so the tune is actually in the key of F (lowered a step to better suit my voice).

Also, the next tune for the festival is gonna be Mississippi Sawyer. Submit your version before the March 15 deadline. Another drawing will be held, the prize to be announced...
