Ihave a banjo coming which is a custom restoration by Vintage Banjo Works. It's a John Haynes 13 inch "Bay State" with a Dobson neck. the head is calf skin. I was looking around at replacements if wanted/needed and 13 inch is hard to come by. I did see that 13 inch Fiberskyn drum heads are relatively easy to get. Is there a significant difference? Can they be substituted?

You must have sufficient clearance for the thick aluminum head hoop both under the hooks and at the neck notch.

Yours being a Dobson style neck...the neck notch might not be a problem.  But vintage banjos made for skin heads (with small flesh hoops)  are sometimes very hard to fit with modern replacements.

If you want a replacement skin head, Elderly has 14, 16 and 18"  all for under $20.  The 14" is likely too small but the 16 or 18" should work just fine.

Shouldnt have to replace the one I have. It is new. But, looking into the future as well as thinking of synthetic options. Thanks guys!

I believe the Renaissance head by Remo was also originally a product marketed to drummers so they may also be available in 13" dia.

If you try a drum head, I think the "Diplomat" line would be the right one forom REMO.  The mylar is a little thinner than some other drum heads (7.5 mil compared to 10 mil or more for others ie: Ambassador, Emperor, or Powerstroke).  Most of the REMO specialty banjo heads are described as "Diplomat".  I assume they are the same thickness.

I've never done it ... but if the hoop will fit your banjo...why not?

R.D.  is correct regarding the renaissance.  remo.com/portal/products/3/8/5...omat.html
