What ratio were these? 2:1 or 4:1 I know there were different variations of tuners such as the 2 tabs and pancakes which are the better tuners? I would assume the pancakes. Do these old tuners have the same shaft diameter as modern day tuners (gotohs, waverly, 5star etc....)? Given the chose between the old pancakes and modern planetaries which would be preferred? Is one better than another or is is aesthetics and originalness vs reliability and function?

My pancakes are 2:1 and I used them for 10 years.
They turn quick, but I have no trouble getting them right on with the tuner.
I like the quickness of getting to the tuned note, butI've gone to modern Keiths(both kinds) and have put the pancakes away while they are still in great shape.

Lee, I think the 2-tabs are 2:1 and generally don't work as well as the old Grover pancakes. The pancakes come in at least two different versions. I think the earlier version (w/ a knurled collar & PAT written over Pending) are also 2:1 &, imho, don't work as well as the slightly later version. I believe the later ('29 & later) version has Pat. Pending written in a curve following the curve of the gear-body & are 3:1.

There are nice new 4:1 versions of the pancakes made by Pavel (sic?). The new Waverly 2-bands work well & no straight tuners work better than the Keith tuners (non D-tuners), again imo.

Has anybody used the McPeake pancakes? Theres a few sets of 2 grovers on ebay as well as a full set of 4 right now. All priced low but im a lil scared of buying them. There's been a rescent surge of parts like these on there and not much info in the description so im a lil scared they might not work or end up being some bull.

I got Gotohs on my banjo now. They work but they don't look the part and one is getting to be a lil aggrevating on fine tuning. Yes I've checked the screw and everything along string path, its the tuner. Thinking about getting another set
