I'm thinking of making a few mountain style banjos and I'm looking for the least expensive heads I can find. Without having to process my own raw hide...

So, who knows where the best deal is at the moment?

I have gotten 3 calfskin heads from Elderly for $9.00 each and have used 2 of them, one on a banjo uke and 1 on a gourd banjo and been happy with both of them.

Those drum head skins from African Rhythms may be too thick....be careful.

I responded above without re-checking the prices on mid-east.  They are higher now than I remember.  The prices at Elderly Instruments are about the same.

But for quality, price and service, It is hard to beat Bill Miller (banjoseen.us/Store/index.html )))  and/or Jeff Menzies (jeffreymenzies.com/ )

I bought two raw hide goat skin 14" dia. for $6.95 each. from Leather Unlimited. Shipping was $9.95. They have some dark areas on them. Both of them were very stinky before I sooaked them in bleach for a few minutes. I hope my goat skin is american but I don't know. Seems to me ordering them from Africa or the Middle East is a bit far away for shipping.
