Ok here is another Free instructional.
This time I am demonstrating a lick used by Bill Monroe, Don Reno and many of the other bluegrass forefathers :P
This works great in bluesy/hard driving bluegrass tunes like Nine Pound Hammer, Sitting on Top of the World or Take this Hammer.

Thanks Jody!
I've heard these licks hundreds of times.
Now I can learn them in context.

Jody,
I think it would be helpful to specify what are your instructions for the fretting hand on the first two notes of the lick:
A) first put down your middle finger to the 3rd fret [and pick that note on the 3rd fret by right thumb];
then lift your middle finger from the 3rd fret and simultaneously put down your index finger to the 2nd fret [and pick that note on the 2nd fret by right index finger]
or
B) first put down BOTH your index finger to the 2nd fret and middle finger to the 3rd fret [and pick that note on 3rd fret by right thumb];
then just lift your middle finger from the 3rd fret [and pick that note on the 2nd fret by right index finger]

Hi Jody..
Great lesson nice clear explanation easy to follow.
I didn't know Bill Monroe played banjo.

Thanks Tam, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Bill Monroe didn't play banjo :)....but his material can be applied to banjo.

Thanks, every time I watch videos here at BHO I grab my 'jo and make my kids complain...what's wrong with kids these days? Banjo's are cool...maybe if Lil Wayne did a bluegrass album?

Thanks Jody, that was a good instructional. Could you post a video showing how to do the bend licks that you use?

Though he could play the banjo. I knew Bill very well, and remember while on his bus between sets at a 1979 Michigan bluegrass festival, he grabbed my banjo and showed me how to play the back up to love come home. Albeit, it was not his instrument, but the old man could have held his own in a jam.

Jody is a great banjo player and If you can take lessons from him it would be the best thing a new picker can do.

Interesting, I was not aware of this. One learns something new every day.

Thanks, Jody. One more phrase to add to the language! Picking the 4th string with the index finger is a real stretch while anchoring with two fingers, but I think I'll be able to get in after some practice.

Thanks Larry,
I'm glad I could be of help.
I remember when I first learned Down the Road by Earl Scruggs, how hard it was to reach that 4th string. It will take a bit of practice to get it.............and Steve, it's JodYYYYY :P
