I just spent a couple of hours on a simple, reversible modification to my "Bottle cap" banjo. I mounted  a maple "tone ring"  inside the aluminum rim. The 1/2 inch high 3-ply maple insert was cut off a Gibson rim to add a metal tone ring. I've been thinking about adding some woodiness to my Epi MB200, but did not have a lathe or the right equipment to make the 11" rim section fit inside the Epi pot. Then I had an inspiration. I remembered using a type of C clip which fitted inside a tube. By cutting out a section of the maple rim, I could emulate such a clip which would press-fit, spring-loaded, into the rim.  Without going into the whole process, if you're interested, I've put a new blog entry up with pictures. it actually took as long to do up the blog and photos as to do the modification

Let's see now... the classic bluegrass sound results from metal on top of wood.  You have created wood on top of metal.

Hope you're ready to start playing all your material back to front from tag lick to intro, Bob.

I think so, but I haven't really played it much yet. Give me a day or two to make sure I'm not feeling the "Hawthorne effect."
