Hi All....
I am loving playing my new(old)la scala tenor with a*** Rogers skin on the 12 3/4 inch pot........The sound is amazing ...I'll find it hard to go back to synthetic again.....but I would Like to tighten the skin Just a bit more....un fortunately the flesh hoop is touching the cutaway at the heel and I dont want to force it down more......any solutions before I use a router to re shape the heel?..(JOKING!) is it ok to tighten more on the tail end side than the neck side??Or if i slack off the head and dampen it with a cloth for 1/2 an hour or so and let it dry....will that shrink up the head a bit??.......Or just get a new skin???
Thanks Guys
John

Hi John,
Where of where did you find such a rare gem as the LaScala? Just kidding, because I played that banjo myself before you got it. I think you could go a little tighter the rest of the way around, but I'd do it gradually. That banjo had been sitting in it's case for 25 years before we played it. I loosened it about 1/4 turn on each nut before I shipped it.
I wondered about raising the tailpiece just a little to reduce the downward pressure? Back in the days before plastic heads I had a small light bulb inside the resonator which I would turn on a half our before I played in humid weather. You probably get more than your fair share of humidity there?
I wonder too if there isn't some modern coating that could be put on a skin head to combat the effects of humidity? Maybe your bod rah players would have an idea?

hiya Billy.....
yes, I actually saw another picture of a la scala with a lightbulb installed in the back....I wondered what all that was about!!!! I have to admit I thought it was just for effect while on stage.......
I have installed a weyman tailpiece which I found....I really like that design and I think it suits the La Scala....
I cant get over how different the skin head sounds....you dont see them much on tenor banjo's over here.....theres something very,........earthy(?) about the sound....
it's turned a few eyes and ears already......
I will get as much milage as I can out of the Roger head first.....there is a small tear on the flesh hoop which I may glue up when I do the strip down I have scheduled for it come the end of my playing season.....
if it ever needs a change i will definitely stick with a skin head ........
