I hope you don't mind my posting this here since she in fact isn't playing the banjo all that long (but several instruments, layered) - but her version is so beautiful and her talent is so impressive that I felt compelled to post!  She may inspire banjo players who haven't already, to figure this song out on the banjo, is my point.  LOVE HER!:

Well, I don't think it goes in Clawhammer/Old-time, but it is (barely) banjo-related.  My take as a whole:  too arty and contrived for my taste.

I'm glad you guys like her!  Well, except for Bill, that is!  I see what you mean about arty and contrived when compared to the song's origins, definitely.  But that said, it's still MUCH better than anything mainstream and for her age (she at least appears to be very young), it's really impressive.  I downloaded the song in fact and turned it up nice and loud this morning and walked around the house with my coffee cup listening to her.  She's also written a whole lot of songs (if you click on her name and go to her youtube page) - she doesn't just do others' songs.  I agree that she's the real deal.  It's hard not to be affected by current trends - especially at her age - and you can hear that but still - so many people her age could just be sitting around texting their friends about the latest American Idol winner or playing video games or doing drugs...this gal's clearly spending her time finding out how creative she can be.  Not just playing several instruments but learning how to record and layer and post on youtube, etc.  Good for her!  But I agree with the barely banjo thing anyway!!  wink

How about moving it to off-topic so maybe more people see it?   Some people don't like the Animals' version of The House of the Rising Sun, but it's my favorite.

How do I move it myslef - or does a monitor have to move it?  Thanks!

Sultans of Claw - Posted - 06/20/2011:  12:43:33

a moderator will have to move it.

I have to agree with you Bill. It certainly is not my taste.

I'm just an old fashioned guy who was an adolescent in the era when it seemed like a good idea to combine old musical forms with recent technology and instrumentation to create a new kind of music.

Since we generally seem to have a great affinity to the music we encountered in adolescence, it's not surprising that I really like this. To me, this type of music actually goes back almost half a century ... only she does it better than was done then. How old does it have to be to be old timey anyway?

I might add that my son had already brought her to my attention, since he thought I would enjoy what she does.

OK, now to Off-Topic, where it will remain.
