Ok, so it's the first really nice day of spring out here in Portland and I'm officially starting to get festival fever.  I decided tonight that I'm definitely heading out to Weiser in two weeks.  I'm not sure of my exact dates yet, but I'll probably be there for a 4-6 day long weekend at the start of the festival, camping in Stickerville.  Anybody else heading out there?  I always enjoy meeting BHO folk in person when I can, so I'll try to stop by and say hi if you are.

Had a great time out at Weiser this past weekend!  A few of the highlights included attending Ron Kane's fiddle workshop where he taught us Shout Lulu (GDAD), Liza Jane (GDGD), Pretty Polly Ann (GDGB), and Eck Robertson's Lost Indian (GDGB); jamming with Sally Jablonsky (fiddler from Rabbit Foot - hadn't played with her in a while and forgot just how good a fiddler she is!); listening to my son Erik play Irish tunes with Skip Gorman and Dave Marshall; camping in between Foghorn and the Water Tower Bucket Boys (I was usually in my sleeping bag by 1:00am and they weren't, so I got serenaded to sleep each night ); Nadine Landry's gumbo; the home-made ice cream social and the square dance in the grass on Monday night; swimming in the local reservoir; playing in the cross-F jam Erik started (so he could play Eric Merrill's Hell and Grace); playing in lots of other great jams with lots of other great friends from up and down the west coast.  My buddy Michael post a few videos of Stickerville jams:

Fortunately we have another week or so to rest up before Fiddle Tunes.

That was a mix of Jackstraw, Water Tower Bucket Boys, and the fiddler was Sam from Corvallis (not sure what band he is in), with members of the Random Canyon Growlers sitting on the car looking on.   That was the tail end of a jam that started the night before and finished around 9:00am.  I think the Jackstraw guys had just arrived around 2:00am, but I'm not sure 'cause I was in my sleeping bag by then.   Heard their truck pull in, but don't know what time.

Regarding the mods moving this topic from "Other Banjo-Related Topics: Clawhammer/Old-Time" to "Off-Topic (Not Banjo Related)":

Wow, the 59th annual old time fiddle contest out in Weiser, Idaho isn't banjo related? Are the mods going to move all the topics about Battleground and Clifftop and Mt Airy and Galax and Grass Valley and ... too? Just for the record, all of the bands mentioned on this thread include (good!) banjo players and all of the videos linked include banjo playing. Two of the videos linked featured Brooks Masten playing banjo, who is a BHO member and master open back banjo builder.

I don't mind that much that this topic got moved, it's not that big a deal, but it seems like a capricious judgement to me.

Also just for the record, I post threads like this to see if other BHO members are going to be at festivals I'm planning to attend so that we can make plans to meet in person. Guess I won't bother posting invites for the upcoming Fiddle Tunes and Centralia Campout festivals. But there will be lots of banjos at both of them! :-)

Another "not banjo related" Weiser highlight I forgot to mention was listening to Bertram Levy (of Hollow Rock String Band fame among many other accomplishments) play banjo in a jam with Jerry Gallaher and Sammy Lind on fiddles.  Incidentally, Jerry Gallaher plays some great banjo on The Hurricane Ridgerunners Field Recorders' Collective CD (highly recommended!).  And a lot of people don't realize that Sammy Lind is a good old time banjo player in addition to being a great old time fiddler.  You can hear a sample of his banjo playing on "Down in the River I Go" on his and Nadine Landry's CD Grandad's Favorite. 

And I guess Doc Huff didn't get the memo about Weiser being "not banjo related", because he was out there with a tent full of his banjos for sale.  He's a great guy and I always enjoy visiting with him, but I didn't get to this trip as he wasn't up yet the one morning I was able to swing by.
