That is one heck of a great video! All three instruments are so strong in it.

That was terrific, Jayme! It flowed well and was strong throughout. Good buildup. Great banjo, too!

I saw a Quebecois band play at the Delaware Valley Bluegrass festival several years ago and they KILLED (even without a banjo).  Has tons in common with Irish music, Cape Breton music (not quite as "fancy" as Cape Breton though) and like great Appalachian and American string band music, comes from a dancing tradition.  This quartet used two fiddles, guitar and electric keyboard.   Yeah I know, I had a "puss" on when they came on stage.  But they won me over!   Like great string band music, it is infectious.  Of course some of the musicians also were good step dancers...

Seems like the name of this band translated to "Red Shoe" or something like that?  Sabot Rouge?  I just can't remember anymore.

Simon St. Pierre, the famous Maine/Quebecois fiddler who hit a lot of northeastern bluegrass festivals back in the 1970s and 80s told me all the Quebec fiddle tunes are "really Irish anyway".

No question in my mind that the 5 string banjo would fit right into a Quebecois string band.  For that matter, a Celtic 4 string would fit too.  I'd like to see it happen and hit some northeastern festivals!  Remember, country music absorbed the wildly popular Hawaiian guitar, now known as the Dobro (tm) and electric steel!

I really liked that performance.   Very "new Celtic" guitar rhythm style, great singing, great banjo and great fiddle.  This should really catch on!  Was it filmed in Quebec?  Where?

Really cool!  I like alot of your licks there!  What language is the song sung in?  My first guess was French, but I'm not sure.

Jayme Stone - Posted - 05/12/2011:  15:13:45

french, it is!

Hi Jayme,  I really enjoyed the video - great playing off one another; particularly liked the sound quality of the recording;  looking forward to hearing you live on Canada Day at Ottawa Jazz Fest.

Thanks,

Charlie

Formidable! I says on the youtube page "it's some of the best acoustic music you'll ever hear." No argument here.

Utterly fantastic! I've had the pleasure of working with Jayme and Genticorum through the Lotus Festival in Bloomington, IN and their music stands out among a huge number of excellent musicians as some of the best performances I've ever heard.

Looking forward to your future collaborations, Jayme!

Ever since I found a CD by a fiddler named Henri Landry, I have been hooked on quebecois. I was wondering if anybody else was working these up on the banjo. I am very slowly working up some podorhythmie as well. (Not very easy while trying to pick.)

I have been playing Reel d'Issoudun incessantly for the last few weeks (picked it up from a Hartford recording), so it's fun to hear another take on it. Is it a popular tune? I can't find many refernces to it.

Thanks again for all the music. It is a joy.

Jayme Stone - Posted - 08/04/2011:  06:18:24

i don't think it's a particularly popular tune. i learned it from yann falquet, who lives and breathes traditional québécios music. i'm intrigued to hear hartford playing this. i've never seen it on a record, where's it from? can you send me a copy?

thanks!

Jaymie,

I just got 2 of your CD's as a birthday present compliments of my brother ( who has excellent taste).

Simply outstanding and inspirational.. !!

"The Utmost" and "Room of Wonders"

Anxious to get others.

I play diatonic accordeons and Quebec is my main music of choice.... your banjo playing is extraordinary...
I have forwarded your youtube clips to other Quebec style box players who are likelwise impressed with your playing.
