Anyway Joes book is simply excellent.

My 2 year old daughter was plaguing me to read to her a couple of nights ago so i pulled out Joes book and read straight from that in a tone of voice with which she was familiar [story book voice], man we were both totally content for best part of an hour and we both learnt something new....i think she is getting a hankering for a Gibson now.

I regarded that as quite clever....

Emiel:  I am referring to TwoTrax who lists his name as "Tim" in his profile.  He obviously has an agenda, which came through on page 1, although there has apparently been some editing along the way that has obscured the original intent of his posts to some degree.  He apparently has a bone to pick with Joe and chose this thread to do so in what I consider to be an inappropriate manner.  I notice that Joe took offense and has been conspicuously absent ever since.

Many people publish articles and books to simply share knowledge or to tell a story.  Few authors make much on their books.  Frankly, I doubt that a scholarly research work on banjos will make much money for Joe.  I'll bet he wrote it as a labor of love.

Other people are easily threatened by the mere prospect of knowledge that is counter to their un-educated, yet firmly held beliefs.  Those people tend to confirm their ignorance and lack of character with baseless personal attacks...

I never questioned Joe Spann statements regarding numbers being used over and over.  I have no dog in this fight, if there is one.  Its a shame, some people found grounds to question his search of information that rattled a lot of chains. Sad hes not around any longer. Be thankful for what the man did for some folks,,,,,,  I for one questioned a ebay seller for having a resonator for sale with number identical to one I own. After Joes book came out,  I found out I was the Dummy,,,,,

Now we have experts on pre wars that have never held or played one. As we know,all pre-wars are not equal to each other,but that has no bearing on it originality or sound quality. Its still what it is and still have pre-war value.I've been told that i live in Va. and got e-mails from moderators that they dont even know that i live in fla. When i joined the forum i put in my correct state of my home and they even argue with me on that. Where is every body gone? I have said before and will continue to say that Joe's book is fantastic.  If you are into prewar Gibson banjos, you will take it off the shelf weekly if not more.  

I don't know Joe personally, but I hope he returns.

For what it's worth - - - Joe's book changed the manufacture date of my mandolin too.

Yea - - I know.  It's "just a mandolin" and not a banjo, but his info changed a few things about it.

I'm not whining/ or shunning anyone as a result.  Some un-named people need to "grow up".

Joe took his time to contact me about a banjo I had bought that I was a little confused about. Just a tb1 conversion, but still Joe had the passion to answer my questions. He knew that it was not a 34 as several had told me including Gruhn where it was purchased 15 years ago, but a 37. He even knew it was one of twelve in that batch, 5 of which are known to exist. We dont want to loose a guy like that!!
I bought his book and have recommended it to others as well. Maybe we should start a petition to BRING JOE BACK!!!

I have a 1927 TB 2 pyramid and wrote to Joe about the banjo. He took the time to respond to my questions telling me about this banjo, when they were introduced, the batch numbers and how many of these little monsters were likely made. Talk about a sleeper. He is willing to answer questions and I, for one, certainly appreciate him as a Gibson banjo expert and as a person willing to share his knowledge with others. I do encourage Joe to come back on the Hangout. Don't let one bad experience spoil the opportunity for everyone else. Hey, if everyone was nice all the time we wouldn't need the BHPD.

I ordered Joe's book and wanted to say I have very much enjoyed it so far. Haven't had time to finish it yet. I was a little disappointed at first that my banjo's # didn't show up in the FON for that year. Later in the book I found out Gibson had several different numbering systems. From 1938-40' they used letter prefixes followed by a #. My banjos # was listed on that page, which I was glad to see.  There is a lot of info in this book. I know a lot of work had to go into it, and I'm looking forward to finishing it. Thanks Joe Spann! EE
