Thought I'd start a topic trying to get some lick swapping happening.

I like playing licks, I like figuring out variations on licks and I like trying to come up with the uncommon lick (I post licks with little video clips on my banjo lick blog at banjolicks.blogspot.com).

I'll start things off with a couple of my favourite licks and hopefully others will join in and this thread will turn into a gianormous collection.

Here's the first one (it's a D lick, good for those V - I spots at the end of sections)...

Here's a Bb lick...

And finally here's an ending lick (for use in the key of G)...

I guess that's a start...if you've got some licks you feel like sharing just post 'em on up.

Cool blog, I've been stealing a few of your licks. What program are you using to make those nice looking tabs?

steve davis - Posted - 04/16/2011:  06:21:06

If I could figure out how to write tabs other than by the--------hyphen method,it might be fun.

Devon Wells - Posted - 04/16/2011:  07:55:13

All I do for writing the tabs: I use the tabledit program, when I'm finished writing I go to FILE > PRINT PREVIEW and from there go to EXPORT and choose 'save as..........png' (this saves it as a png image file, you can also use jpeg but I've found png looks a little better).  The last step for licks is I crop them using GIMP (you can also use photoshop but GIMP is free at gimp.org).

Let me know if that's helpful.  I don't mind if people put licks in text format though...the licks themselves are what matters.

Devon.

When I was looking for a tablature software I couldn't find a good free one so I bought tabledit.

It is overall a solid tablature software and is surely not the worst money I ever spent.  I've gotten alot of use out of its nice not having people ask me "is that a 6?" "uh, no...that's a 2."

You can download a demo which saves 16 measures only. tabledit.com/download/index.shtml

P.S: I have bought full version of TablEdit years ago and I am very satisfied.

Thanks,Mirek.I'll try that out.

It says I'm supposed to run a tabled32.exe distribution file.

Could you tell me where I can find that?

It told me to download at my own risk so I guess I'll pass.

I would be more suspicious if it told me it was absolutely no risks!

steve davis - Posted - 04/28/2011:  05:33:03

I might try and see if I can photograph my tabs and then put them up.

Let's try this: It's a rockabilly thing I'm working on...

-----------0-------------0-------------9-----------------0--------------0------------0-----------------
------5/6----6----5/6-----6----- -----6--------6-------------------5---------------------------------
------6/7----7----6/7-----7-----------7------------7-----------3-----------------------3-----0-----
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------5--------
---0---------------------------------0--------0-------------------------------0-------------------------

Sorry you might have to use your imagination a bit. It's a bit removed from standard scruggs so just kinda go for it.

I downloaded the free tabledit,but I don't understand how to use it,yet.

Once I've got it looking right on the tabledit page, how do I get it over to here?

fixdent - Posted - 10/29/2011:  09:21:14

purchasing the program is well worth the money. You can take tabs from books, enter them into tabledit and save them for yourself.....change measures that work better for you etc.

It's well worth the money.

I'm just interested in writing down my ideas...mostly 2 to 4 measures.

Photographing paper tabs works good enough.

If you have any sort of home printer, chances are it has a scanner too (for faxing).

You can scan the paper in.

That works better than taking pics I think.

Then all you do is make a blank sheet of tab and copy/print copies and write on those.

It's probably the fastest way of getting tab down. (I use Musedit because it's more versatile but tabbing in the computer is still more time-consuming than doing it with pencil and paper).

steve davis - Posted - 10/29/2011:  13:59:25

Well,I know how to take pictures and run my printer.

I do not know if it works also in demo version, but in full version it can be done by rolette menu File > Export > Export ASCII, which creates txt file. The content of txt file can be copied-pasted here. Do not forgot to highlight the tab and put it into "formatted" font. It should look like:

I don't know how to do what you said,Mirek, but I thank you.
I'll try photographing hand-written tabs.

pearcemusic - Posted - 10/30/2011:  05:52:14

hey Steve ... you can also download and install a utility called "BullZip Printer". It allows you to "print" a jpg picture of whatever program you are using (tabledit for instance). You can print any tab you are working on (as a jpg) and upload it to the BHO as a photo, then attach it to your post.

probably more trouble than Mirek's method, but it could work as an alternate way of getting a tab up on the BHO.

steve davis - Posted - 10/30/2011:  06:10:15

Well,if it's more trouble than Mirek's way and I don't understand Mirek's way ?
What's a utility?
