Pastor Harry Timmins devised a simple and brilliant solution to the common problem of an overstretched crown on a skin head. He took the aluminum hoop from an old mylar head and adapted it as a spacer. Way To Go Harry!

Brilliant. I have a banjo that needs that operation. I'm gonna do it today, thanks!

thanks, Pastor Harry, that's what I call a Maui-wowie!

I wish Pastor Harry was my neighbor. I could get brilliant ideas like this from him, as well as guitar lessons, and I would live on Maui.

Another thing that works well: take out the square brass flesh hoop from an old skin head and put it between the hoop and top of the head. You can pick up about 1/8" using it.
Credit is due to you too Wayne...I missed that when you posted it before...Bravo!

Here's a post I made earlier regarding this very thing, ....and there's other head tweaking info that everybody working on banjos should be aware of.

Why didn't I think of that? My Miller head might be going back on my Ome now...

I just tried that fix today and found it may not work on some inexpensive Asian import banjos, unless you're willing to do some surgery as well- the tension hoop on my bottlecap does not have a cut-out area for the fingerboard, so putting in the spacer brought the hoop too high for the strings to clear. Ah, well, I was due to take it apart and clean it up soon anyway. Just taking the head off and re-seating everything made it sound better anyway, so nothing lost. With the right kind of tension hoop, it looks like a great idea.
