Hello Rick,
you could buy a cheap USB interface, making sure it has an XLR input, and an XLR cable.
Most of these come with software, however if yours doesnt, you can download Audacity, and the LAME encoder (both for free) which allows you to record audio and convert it to MP3.
Your USB interface could be something as simple as this bluemic.com/icicle/

Hi Rick,
Your Dell will not accept the low level of the SM57 directly, so as already stated you would need an interface that is capable of boosting the signal. Check to see if your laptop has a built-in mic, which it most likely does if it's of the newer variety. If it has a built-in mic and you're running windows you can use the built in sound recorder to capture your audio. Don't discount it, as the sound can be pretty good using that setup alone. If you're good with starting and stopping you may not need to edit, just convert the resulting wav file to mp3 that can be uploaded here to your home page sound files area.
My windows sound recorder displays the option of converting to mp3, so you can do it all with what's already on your computer.
There are also several good wav to mp3 format converters available as free downloads on the web.
I have used the free CDex format conversion program for several years now. It's available here:
