Over the years, the M-powered Windows xp ProTools programs have all been pretty consistently rock solid. All the way up to Pro Tools 8.0.4cs2. (cs2 = the 2nd customer support free upgrade to take care of bugs/fixes you'd never hardly run into).
Last week or so they introduced version 8.0.5, which had a few basic fixes, but it's like the old saying goes, "If it ain't broken, don't fix it..." Well, I should have heeded that advice. Version 8.0.5 will stall (won't work with) on the AutoTune 5 software for vocal pitch correction. Pro Tools will launch if I remove the AutoTune files from the appropriate plug-in folders for Digidesign. But I paid good money for Autotune and would like to use it.
I started a thread on the Avid community support, and first the guy's like "check and see that your iLoks are all have current drivers." So I did, and no change. Then he said to make sure I'm using the latest version of AutoTune, which I already was. Then, the big one, that started to upset me, he told me to launch ProTools in a new Admistrative Account. So I attempted to do that, but that didn't work either. And then windows xp hid my original administrator account. It took several days to find how to unhide hidden accounts.
So, to sum up, if you have an m-powered ProTools on Windows XP, don't upgrade to 8.0.5. It isn't worth the trouble.

having beta tested for them for years, I NEVER install a new update unless I KNOW FOR SURE it fixes a basic problem I am having.

Oh :( That's not good!
I would say try upgrading to PT9 (it's well worth it) Although I only did it because uni gave us a free copy of windows 7
