I always loved my grandmother's coleslaw. The whole family did. You can imagine my surprise when my mother told me grandma's secret slaw dressing was really just a jar of T. Marzetti's.
I have been using Marie's, but lately I can't find any coleslaw dressing at my local grocer. It's usually in the refrigerated produce section. I don't know what's up, but it's not there.
The word coleslaw comes from the Dutch koolsla, which means cabbage salad. It's really wide open as to what ingredients go in as long as there is cabbage. Traditionally coleslaw is shredded cabbage, carrots, celery seed with a creamy or vinegar based dressing.
What's your secret coleslaw dressing?

Don't have a good recipe myself...but a place down the road sells a mayo based cole slaw that has a little blue cheese in it. Fantastic. Hope somebody posts one with the same!

Don't tell anyone, but my "secret" coleslaw dressing is
1 part honey mustard dressing
1 part plain yogurt
2 parts mayonnaise
sprinkling of cayenne pepper

Marzetti's. Guess I could try making my own... two tablespoons at a time.

Randy: if you can score a copy of the Memphis Blues cookbook, there are several that I've used that are good.
Nothing spectacular.

Believe my mother just sprinkled the shredded cabbage with vinegar and salt, but there may have been more to it than that.

Some folk like "creamy" cole slaw, and some like the non-creamy type. If you like KFC cole slaw, this is my recipe. Always taste the sauce before you mix it in to see if it needs a little more mayo or vinegar.
1 cabbage, shredded
2 carrots, shredded
1 cup Mayonnaise or Salad Dressing
2 Tbs white vinegar
1 tsp celery seed
½ tsp salt
4 tsp sugar
Once you stir it up, it really needs to sit an hour or so.

I'm with bikebum. I use Marzetti's. Not sure I could make it better.

I've never measured.
Big spoonful of mayo (I love Duke's)
Pinch or two of sugar
A grind or two of peppercorns
Vinegar (whatever I have on hand) to bring it to the consistency I want.
That's it!

I have enjoyed the type with apple cider vinegar/ canola oil / dry mustard /sugar/ salt & pepper to taste and a heap of poppy seed tossed into the slaw. I put it in a vacume jar to get it ready in an hour. especially goes with pork.
