I would like to get a Banjo Mute and since I am just getting back into it and see a number of different types, I am confused. Can anyone give me some suggestions as to which is best and easiest to use? It is not like cost is not a factor. :D No hundred dollar mutes for me :D

It seems most folk agree on Mike's Mutes, what do you use with a Moon bridge besides a piece of sponge under the strings. Larry

I agree whole-heartedly with the above. It works. Unfortunately, I like the sound quality better when my banjo is muted.

Hummmm? That didn't work out for me. I tried to order one and it took all my information, address and credit card information and then it tried to force me to use Paypal. Well I don't want to use pay pal, I want to use my credit card. I called Mike and he said it was my only option other than sending a money order. I just want to buy the dang thing :D Anyone else have a suggestion on one that I do not have the hoops to jump through>

The Acoustic Musician sells them on their website. I think you can use a credit card there.

You can use the putty-like stuff sold for hanging posters on either the bridge or the head for muting. It's cheap, about $1.50 to $2.00 a package and you get enough of the putty to do a Whole lot of muting. Works on any bridge. It looks like this on the bridge and will give you a dobro-like tone used like this:

Here you go. Attached below is an excerpt of a muted banjo played with a slide. I raised the action with a makeshift nut extender (popsicle stick with string slots filed in.)

I have a collection of mutes including violin mutes which can be used on a banjo, and one of them which is metal looks like that but its not a Waverly. I have found that all the best ones sit on the bridge.

These old Waverlies sit on the bridge, but they also damage it--espeically if you put the banjo in its case without taking 'em off. Still they have served me for nearly 30 years. I still use 'em, but if they touch each other while on the bridge, they tend to rattle.

You're welcome, Dave. Try it out. I think you'll like it. You can use the putty for just a subtle change in tone all the way to really dramatic muting. You can even use it to keep the other mutes from vibrating.
