its funny how traditions move around and evolve. The Newfoundland Mummering tradition is totally different as this wiki article introduces:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mummers_...d_Mummers

it was actually outlawed at one point. since the tradition involves entering a strangers home disguised, there were a few who took advantage of the anonymity to make burglaries (the official reason), the real reason is more complicated of course but thats a different story.

here's the Newfoundland Mummers anthem: youtube.com/watch?v=D8OPy7De3bk

don't mean to hijack! I just didn't know there were other mummering traditions still alive in north america so I thought i'd share.

Not a hijack at all, Been!! I find the evolution of Mummery and it various forms that remain throughout the world to be very interesting. There's no doubt that the version in Philadelphia is off the charts in terms of what it has grown into. But of what I know of it's history and lore, the Philadelphia version has grown and evolved from roots that most definitely resemble the Newfoundland Mummers. Thanks so much for sharing that!! I really love seeing that the tradition still survives in its original form in other parts of the world.

Ladies and Gents....12th Street Rag performed by the Greater Kensington String Band, a rendition arranged by my friends, Mr. Brian Reed.

I must have hit a wrong button, this is my second try. to answer...LOL!

Great meeting finally at the shows. With Mum Geeks like us, we meet and it's like I knew you for 30 years!

QC sounded awesome at the shows. Didn't hear GOSB live, I was following my 10 year old around watching him perform. What a treat!

GOSB trivia, Mr. Music Director.....on the album "Musical Gems", who played the alto sax solo on "Time on My Hands"? and don't Driadon for the answer! LOL

Just returned from a fantastic weekend in Atlantic City and the annual Mummers String Band "Show of Shows".....this was the standout banjo moment for me. The Quaker City guys are phenomenal.
